Kitchen Experiments

Growing up, my sister Brenda loved to make scones. And I can't lie...she was dang good at it. It always looked so easy to my ten-year-old self. Heat some oil, throw in some biscuits, and coat with sugar: Foolproof right? Just after we got married, my mother-in-law referred me to this blog: http://thepioneerwoman.com/. This lady makes almost everything from scratch. It's one of those blogs where you get pictures with every step of the recipes. I've had her homemade doughnuts saved as a quick-link in my internet toolbox for months, claiming I couldn't make them because it was too cold for the dough to rise, and I needed a thermometer. Mark being the great man he is, bought me a thermometer for Christmas. I still don't think our house is warm enough for the dough to rise properly, and I feel guilty spending that much time in the kitchen when I could be doing schoolwork. Actually I think I just have an unconquered fear of destroying a huge baking projects and if it didn't work, I'd think of all the money and time I had just wasted.
Anyways, then I found a recipe blog though a friend of a friend and decided to try her easy Biscuit doughnuts. Foolproof! 1 can of Pillsbury biscuits, fry them in oil and dip them in some glaze (1 cup powdered sugar and 3 TBSP milk). They turned out pretty darn tasty....except for the fact that they were still basically raw in the middle. It was a weird sensation to bite into a doughnut/scone, and then taste dinner roll dough. (Yes I made sure not to buy the butter or garlic kind) I was too impatient and got the oil way too hot to allow enough time for more than just the outside to cook. Next time, I will definitely start with the heat lower, but they sure were tasty!

I love kitchen experiments. I think they're fun. What you made sure looks yummy! I'll have to give it a try one of these days...after I go buy some sugar...I'm all out. :) Love you!
