The Rum That Comes Back to Haunt Us

I'm 21 now. Most everyone knows that. And I'm proud to say that I have made it a whole month without being "tempted to drink". This is probably what will keep me from doing so:

I now work at apartments in the afternoons Tues-Thursday. The workers there only have about 5 kids to deal with and often give us food to eat. I was fed an orange yesterday and it was fantastic as usual (I've suddenly become addicted to oranges). Other girls had been fed wierd cakes with rum and other questionable items. Mario told us to be polite and either say no thank you (you can't say no to a Romanian unless your Romanian though! We tried it at the wedding we crashed on Saturday), or say you're going to take it home to eat later. Or if you're our facilitator Rachel, you chuck it out the window when no one is watching! :)
Today at the apartments we got fed something I think they call "Crap Cake" (not really...sorry for the word mom but it really was!). They used leftover Rum cake from last week's birthday party, mixed it with these wafers these kids eat and some milk or who knows what and made it into some moist unbaked cake/bread stuff. The worker gave it to me and it reminded me of raw meat almost. I hoped it was for the kids but alas, no the glass plate with two generous slices was for me. There was something about it that tasted funky. Jena told me it was rum cake.Ahh! Then I recognized it. The same flavor that was in the mistakenly bought swiss rolls here from Kauffland! I barely got down one slice without throwing up and put the other one in my bag for "a casa". The more I tried to eat it, the more gross it became. I really hope wherever they're getting that Rum from is out and that they can't buy more till August.

We were thinking how sad it is that we've been here a month and haven't had "gourmet" Romanian food. But in a way I'm sort of grateful...if I don't like it, I don't feel guilty about throwing it away right there or refusing.

Haha! How funny Brittany...I love your stories of all your adventures there in Romania! That would be scary though...eating food with rum and you not even knowing...I bet it does taste nasty. Love you!
